“How about a cold beer?” asks Germaine
Robichaud, her smile warming the seasonally cool air at the Café Capri
Bistro in Dieppe.
Five months into her first taste of the service industry, the combination
waitress, cook and proprietor breezes through the hallways of the converted
starter home. Walls have been removed, a female bathroom and outdoor patio
added. But the place still feels like a home, from the original fireplace in
the main room, to the kitchen crafts and prints that adorn the walls.
To complete the down home feel, signature dishes are served up, like an
Aioli Chicken sandwich and spinach salad. “It accounts for about 80 per cent
of our orders,” says Germaine.
That was the hope when Germaine expanded the menu from coffee and muffins to
include soups, sandwiches and quick-serve dishes like vegetarian
quesadillas. “Because you can’t sell coffee and stay in business,” she says
with a laugh.
She certainly sold me. The charming ambiance and affordable, homemade food
combine for a nostalgic trip that teases the senses. Throw in the free
wireless internet, free-trade organic coffees and live entertainment on
Friday nights and the Cafe feels more home than a renovated old house.
